June 16, 1963: Valentina Terechkova becomes the first woman to fly into space.

March 18, 1965: Alexis Leonov, the Russian astronaut becomes the first person to step out into space.

December 15, 1965: Two US Gemini spacecraft successfully met in space. The US began a period of overtaking Russia in the aerospace sector.

January 27, 1967: Apollo airship crew crashed during an underground test at Cap Canaveral center.

April 23, 1967: Vladimir Komarov, the first astronaut dies after returning to Earth as the Soyouz-1 spacecraft explodes.

On February 19, 1986: Launching Russia's third generation MIR space station. This space station ceased operation in March 2001.

April 25, 1990: Hubble Space Telescope was launched into orbit.

November 2, 2000: Two Russian astronauts and one American became the first residents of the ISS station.

January 17, 2003: A Chinese official announced the launch of Shenzhou V.

February 1, 2003: American Columbia spacecraft exploded, killing seven astronauts.

September 8, 2003: Chinese television officially confirmed the flight of the Shenzhou V spacecraft on October 15.
