The agency recommends that people living in the area should take shelter due to the increase in toxic gas levels and maintain the red alert level for aviation given on May 15. This means no flights are allowed to operate in the area.

Scientists believe that this is the first eruption in a series of more intense eruptions that may occur in the next few hours.

The eruption occurred two days after Halemaumau crater spewed out blocks of rock and large columns of volcanic ash.

Kilauea volcano erupted lava from May 4 and the magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the area a day later. This is the second largest eruption in 100 years in Hawaii.

Local authorities have evacuated about 2,000 residents urgently. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is one of 5 volcanoes in the Big Island of Hawaii.
