Rescue efforts focused on the town of Aranayaka 100 km northeast of Colombo. Here, the authorities noted that three villages were sunk in the floodwaters.

In an emergency meeting in Aranayaka, officials from the Sri Lankan Red Cross expressed concern that the death toll could be higher than the official statistics from the government."The meeting showed that about 300-400 people may have died in the landslide in Aranayaka," Reuters quoted Neville Nanayakkara, Sri Lanka Red Cross organization director.

Earlier, the Sri Lankan government released a number of 150 people rescued by the rescue forces from the Aranayaka region, while there were still 150 people trapped in the floodwaters.

Meanwhile in Bulathkopitiya, a landslide also occurred, killing the lives of 16 people.

Lethal floods often occur in Sri Lanka, especially during the rainy season from May to September.
