Hitachi introduced a 1TB hard drive
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies had a spectacular early departure from competitors when it announced a hard drive up to 1TB last weekend, just before the opening of CES 2007.
Analysts predict the product will be officially shipped this year, and according to Hitachi, they plan to release a 1TB drive from the first quarter of 2007 for $ 399, considerably cheaper than using two drives. 500GB at current prices. As the Deskstar 7K1000 code, the product will be shown in Las Vegas this week, within the framework of CES 2007 exhibition.
The new 1TB hard drive will be divided into three versions, but currently only Desktar is available for release. Hitachi plans to release additional version of CinemaStar for DVR and digital receiver, along with a business version in the second quarter of this year.
Important milestones
Source: Hitachi " No wonder this is an important milestone for the storage industry ," said John Ryding, director of research for hard drives and components of IDC. " It's great that the technology village can launch a 1TB drive on the 51st birthday " (the first hard drive produced by IBM in 1956).
The storage industry took 35 years to reach the 1GB threshold (1994), another 14 years to surpass the 500GB threshold (2005), but it only took another two years to break the 1TB limit.
Hitachi hopes to become the first to market a 1TB drive. Currently, the most competitive competitor for this title with Hitachi is Seagate, when Seagate also confirms that it will ship 1TB drive in the first quarter of 2007.
Designed, the Deskstar 7K1000 will be a 5-disk (5-platter) drive, each capable of storing 200 GB of data. Like the 750GB drive model with Seagates Barracuda 7200.10 code, Deskstar uses the superior magnetic dispatch (PMR) technology.
Hitachi said the new drive will target gaming computers and require high performance. With a price of 399 USD, the Deskstar 7K1000 is really attractive to consumers. In fact, they pay only $ 0.4 for every gigabyte of data - a level that is far superior to existing products on the market. By comparison, a 500GB hard drive currently costs $ 0.45 / GB and Seagates 750GB Barracuda hard drive is the same.
However, analysts also recommend that users should not expect a free fall in the storage market. " New products will not impact the market in a negative direction ," the company said.
