Hoa Binh: Transforming crops on the land in Dan Hoa

Dinh Xuan Thao - Secretary of the Party Committee of Dan Hoa commune, Ky Son district (Hoa Binh) pointed out the green sugarcane field excitedly saying: Previously, this area, farmers only transplanted a precarious rice crop, the rest is wasteland. Now with the attention of all levels and changing people's farming practices, the drought field has now been replaced by the green color of the cane.

Farmers who grow rice depend mainly on rainwater. If the rain is favorable, the 1,000 m2 of rice fields will be harvested at 2 kg of rice. Therefore, one year, neighbors are only able to cultivate one rice crop and leave the wild land. Before this reality, the Party Committee of Ky Son had a plan to change the structure of crops, the Party Committee of Dan Hoa commune also issued a specialized resolution to implement this issue. Therefore, in 2006, the limited area of land in Denh hamlet was transferred to nearly 4 hectares of white sugarcane.

In order to help people with production capital, the district People's Committee supported 100% of seed money, in addition, the commune also gave credit to borrow 4 tons of NPK fertilizer without interest, worth nearly 7 million VND. Currently, sugarcane grows relatively well and is preparing for harvesting, according to the market price, each hectare of sugarcane will generate VND 50 million. Thus, sugarcane cultivation yields many times more than rice cultivation.

In order to have a source of irrigation water for production in the winter-spring crop of 2007, Ky Son District People's Committee has extracted nearly 450 million VND from the construction of Denhai and was put into use from the end of November 2006. Bai Denh completed a source of irrigation water for more than 25 hectares of fields in 2 villages of Denh and Dong Giang. From a previous crop of rice, now, two neighbors will have a water source to cultivate 2 rice crops and 1 color crop, contributing to improving the land use coefficient and increasing income per unit of cultivated area.
