Internet sharing between Laptop and PPC

With a laptop connected to the Internet, you can share that connection with many other portable devices, or you can share data between these devices via Ad-hoc network. In other words, turn your Laptop into a Hot Spot for other PPCs.

Ad-hoc network is a network made up only by devices or computers that do not have a device or computer that organizes and regulates network traffic. Each machine acts as a server for this machine but is a Client for another computer. Ad-hoc networks are also known as Peer-to-Peer networks.

Way 1

Share files by setting a static IP and sharing the internet by setting Proxy using Wingate or Winrout

Device requirements : Laptop, PPC, Internet line (Dial-up or ADSL)

Installation steps :

* Create wireless network on Laptop : Set static IP and SubNet Mask for computer. For example:

IP: 192.168.0.1

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Switch to WireLess Networks Tab and select Add

- Name : Network Name SSID:
Example: Network Name (SSID): PhamKhoa

- Network Authenticate : Shared

- Data Encryption : WEP

- Check into the box " This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network; wireless access points are not used ".

- Select Ok 2 times to finish.

- Share some folders on Laptop for PPC access.
For example: Right Click on drive D:, select Web Sharing .

* Setting up Pocket PC (PPC) :

- Turn on Wireless, PPC will automatically receive the pre-installed NetWork Name (SSID) on the laptop, enter the key (if any) to access.

- The Settings section of the Network Card, the " My Network card connects to " section select " Work " (You can find the link: Start / Settings / Connections / NetworkCards select the Network Adapters tab )

- Go back to the Wireless Tab : in the " Networks to Access " section, select " Only Computer-to-Computer ".

- Select the network name you just found, select " Connect to: Work "

- Check the box: " This is a device-to-device (Ad-Hoc) connection "

- Enter NetWork Key (if the Laptop is set)

- Set IP address and Subnet Mask just like on Laptop (do not place IP on PPC coinciding with IP on Laptopý). For example:

IP: 192.168.0.3

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

You have completed setting up wireless peer-to-peer network to share data between Laptop and Pocket PC. To try to see if the network has just been set up, we will now access the folders Shared on Laptop in the previous step.

On Pocket PC you can use a number of file management programs like File Manager integrated on Windows Mobile or Resco Explorer software to check by opening shared folders at Laptop. For File Explorer you can only watch Video files or listen to music by copying to your PPC.

However, with Resco Explorer you can use most functions such as a normal file management program with a Shared folder after connecting to the computer through the Map Driver function, the Shared folders on Laptop will be listed.

Now you can use PPC to view video files on your laptop without saving to a memory card or sharing files easily.

To connect to the internet, you can use some of the most popular internet sharing proxies that are WinGate or WinRout.

Method 2

File and Internet sharing uses DHCP and DNS services of Windows XP, 2003

Follow the path Start / Settings / Control Panel / Network Connection, select the existing Internet connection. Select Properties / Select Advance

Choose :

- " Allow other network users to connect this computer connection thought "

- Select wireless network Wireless Network Connection .

- Select Advance , select the services you want to share (file, mail.v.v).

You do not need to declare and install anything on PPC, after connecting if it is not accessible, you use Repair function with your wireless connection and then use Renew function on PPC.

Done, your PPC now can use the Internet and share files with Laptop.

Tricks have been successfully tested on devices :
IBM Laptop R50e,
PPC Phone 02MiniS,
PALM Tungsten E
