Irradiation to create new sesame seeds

By irradiating gamma rays (Co60) on black sesame, Vietnamese researchers have created mutant sesame varieties with beneficial traits such as many fruits, not reducing the quality of oil in sesame .

The topic ' Application of the mutant sesame seeding method ' was carried out by Master Pham Ngoc Nga - Young Science and Technology Development Center was approved by the council on the afternoon of May 21 at Department of Science - Technology HCMC.

In the above topic, the author used gamma radiation rays (Co60) on objects of black sesame (Tay Ninh black sesame seed) over the next 2 generations.

The results showed that in the first generation, after irradiation, black sesame trees appeared many variations such as branching and tops, many fruits. In both generations, the high and low fruit branching mutations often appear together to increase the yield of raw grain (6.4% -10.4%) but not reduce the oil content and Quality of oil in sesame seeds.

The author affirmed, the results achieved in the 2nd generation showed that the selective variation in the first generation continues to be genetic for the 2nd generation.

Raw grain yield in the 2nd generation increased compared to generation 1 and especially the oil content in the grain was not affected. For many fruit variants, the study shows that this is a promising hybridization variant to create new sesame seeds.

Most members of the acceptance committee have the same idea that with a budget of 50 million VND and the implementation time within 1 year, the method of using radiation to create some mutated lines is beneficial to the engine. Department for future research of Mr. Doan Pham Ngoc Nga is very remarkable.
