The AP news agency quoted USGS as saying the new earthquake strengthened 6.2 on the Richter scale. It happened at about 3:51 local time this morning (July 25) with the epicenter at a depth of 35.6km on the Pacific Ocean, about 94km east of Fukushima area.

The report said the epicenter of the earthquake on the Japanese capital of Tokyo is about 282km to the northeast. Earlier, on Saturday afternoon (July 23), a 6.4-magnitude strong earthquake struck the same area off the east coast of Honshu island.

There have been no reports of casualties or losses from both incidents. No tsunami warning was given.

Official statistics show that about 23,000 people died or were still missing throughout the northeastern coast of Japan after the earthquake, accompanied by a tsunami on March 11. Another 80,000 other victims were forced to leave their homes ahead of the threat of radiation from the Fukushima Dai-ichi leaked nuclear power plant.
