Many people are said to still be stuck under the rubble. Rescue workers are actively digging to find survivors on the scene.

On the evening of April 14, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake also occurred in the area, killing 9 people and injuring more than 800 people.

A village was evacuated after the earthquake broke a dam. According to reporter Rupert Wingfield-Hayes from the BBC, the new earthquake in Kyushu was much stronger than the earthquake on April 14 and affected a larger area. Thousands of people flocked to the streets and arrived temporarily at the parks.
