Emperor penguins at the Asahiyama Zoo, on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, are starting a special exercise to avoid fat accumulation in the winter.

Every day, they had to walk twice at 11:00 and 14:30, each time for 500 meters for about 30 minutes to not become too humble.

Tetsuo Yamazaki, a zoo spokesman, said that the penguins became heavy in the winter because they often stood still to conserve energy. This training program lasts from December until spring begins.

" Like humans, penguins also have fat accumulation in the winter months and high blood sugar levels ," Yamazaki said. He also said penguins can only walk during snowy months, because their feet are not suitable for walking on other surfaces.
