Large loris species found in Phu Quoc

Recently, employees of Widlife At Risk have discovered the large loris present in Phu Quoc.

June 8, MSc. Nguyen Vu Khoi, of Widlife At Risk, said that in two surveys in January 2005 and April 2006, the presence of a large loris species in Phu Quoc Island was discovered.

This is the first time that loris have been discovered in Phu Quoc. Previously, scientific documents noted that this species only lived from the northern border of Vietnam to Thua Thien Hue.

A farmer on Phu Quoc island seized three large loris at home (October 2005 caught two children and in December 2005, one was captured). They came from the edge of the forest to the field (close to the forest) of a household to eat jackfruit and fruits grown in the garden.

Preliminary descriptions of the three loris were photographed, from 37cm to 37cm in length, thick brownish against small loris and a brown stripe along the spine.

According to farmers and forest rangers of the National Park, the Culi species here have big children and young children. They are still relatively common in the forest and especially after the rainy season, they often appear along the roadside, forest cover at night.

The images of this loris were also verified with experts of the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, Mr. Dang Huy Phuong, along with experts of Endangered Primate Rescue Center in Cuc Phuong National Park. , Dr. Ulrike Streicher. This species has been identified as a large loris (Nycticebus bengalensis).

Currently, this household has actively released these 3 loris to the forest.

Culi is a species banned from hunting because it is listed in the Vietnam Red Book and regulations of the Forest Protection Sector.

In the future, scientists will continue to survey the abundance of Culi populations in Phu Quoc.
