According to the researchers, earlier, the first Montsechia Vidalii fossils were discovered more than a century ago in limestone mines in the Iberia Mountains , Central Spain and the Montsec range of the Pyrenees.

However, most of the fossil samples were misinterpreted because the plant did not have "flower parts " as clearly as petals or bile secretions to attract insects.
