Manufacturing heart thanks to 3D printing technology

The heart model made with 3D printing has saved the life of a 14-month-old boy in a heart surgery. This is the result of the fabrication of engineers at JB Speed School of Science and Technology under Louisville University. Researchers have created a model of children's hearts with 3D printing technology that allows doctors to better plan before the surgery is officially performed.

Dr. Dean Dydysnki, head of the imaging engineering department at Kosair Children's Hospital, asked for help from Louisville University when he and his team of doctors were looking to cure Roland Lian Cung Bawi, a baby boy. Out with 4 congenital heart defects. At the research center, Dr. Philip was impressed with the capabilities of 3D printing technology here.

Using heart CT images of Roland, researchers created a heart model with 3D printing technology with a size 1.5 times larger than the real size. The heart is made up of three parts from flexible fibers, which takes about 20 hours to perform and costs a total of $ 600.

Heart surgeon Erie Austin III, chief of the surgical team, used a heart model to come up with a solution and plan for surgery. Finally, the team was able to solve all disabilities in just one operation on February 10.

Dr. Austin said: 'I think the heart model is the solution to planning a heart surgery that is inherently complicated.

After the surgery, Roland was discharged on February 14. Currently, health is in a normal recovery state after returning to follow-up on February 21.

For researchers at the University of Louisville, the success of surgery thanks to 3D printed hearts has contributed to expanding the field of application of this advanced technology. Previously, researchers still focused on research and development of 3D printing technology to serve production and heavy industries.
