Many locations in central Ho Chi Minh City turn off electricity during Earth Hour
From 20h30 to 21h30 on March 28, advertising lights, outdoor decoration in front of the headquarters of the City People's Committee, the city theater, Nha Rong wharf, the park of Uncle Ho monument and Turtle Lake will be turned off.
Both people and businesses are called upon to turn off lights to respond to the campaign. Particularly electric lights in important areas such as hospitals, traffic lights, street lights . still turn on normally.
According to Ho Chi Minh City's leaders, the city's participation in response to Earth Hour 2009 campaign aims to build a common sense to contribute to climate change mitigation; raise awareness of the community's responsibility to use energy efficiently and economically.
Earth Hour is a global campaign initiated by the International Fund for Nature Protection (WWF), calling on people and businesses to turn off the lights for one hour on the last Saturday night of March every year. The campaign was first performed in Sydney (Australia) in 2007.
In 2008, the campaign spread worldwide with more than 400 cities and 50 million participants. The highlight is the lights are turned off at many famous landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, Coliseum Arena, Golden Gate Bridge and many big cities like San Francisco, Toronto, Bangkok, Chicago .
