Recently, expert Celestino Odín Rodríguez Nava, of the Mexican National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), has discovered many types of fungi capable of cleaning contaminated water by pharmaceuticals within 6 hours.

The research project led by Dr. Rodríguez Nava has found some edible fungi that contain enzymes (proteins that catalyze chemical reactions), with oxidizing ability to reduce pollution.

In particular, Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus sp.), Mung mushroom (Pycnoporus sanguineus) and Yunnan mushroom (Maximum Trametes) have the highest pharmaceutical purification effect.

In addition, the study focused on finding natural compounds that can be used in wastewater treatment systems to eliminate pharmaceuticals in nanoparticles and micrograms.

According to Dr. Rodríguez Nava, there is an emerging content of pollutants in wastewater, including analgesics, antibiotics, lipid modifications, hormones, caffeine, and even drugs.

The study focused on analyzing five common pharmaceuticals, including bezafibrato, gemfibrozil, indomethacin, diclofenac and sulfamethoxazole, toxic to indicator organisms in wastewater treatment plants.

Scientific research shows that there are toxic effects on indicator organisms and should be prevented to reduce the harm to the ecosystem's food chain.
