Mint tea helps reduce hirsutism
Drinking two cups of peppermint tea a day can help women treat hair on the face, chest and abdomen, Turkish researchers said.
Tea works by reducing the amount of male hormones in these women. But other experts say the result is still too new.
Hirsutism occurs in both men and women but it is more annoying in women because of cosmetic problems. According to the researchers, hair growth is much due to abnormally high androgenic levels.
"Current measures include taking drugs or suppressing androgen production, or preventing the body from reacting to androgen, but this study shows that mint may be an effective natural measure for women who suffer from mild illness, " said researcher Mehmet Numan Tamer at Suleyman Demirel University in Turkey.
Peppermint has been widely used in the treatment of indigestion, vomiting, as well as common cold, cough, sinusitis, bronchitis.
Researchers believe that peppermint may be related to the loss of exercise in urban men (due to the effects of androgen content). A previous study also found mint reduces testosterone levels in mice.
In the new study, 21 women with hirsutism drank 2 cups of mint tea for 5 days at a certain period in their periods. All have reduced levels of free testosterone in the body and increased levels of feminine hormones are estrogen and follicle stimulating hormone. But it is unclear if there is a change in the amount of excess hair.
