Monkeys also know how to choose ripe fruits
The white monkey mangabey knows not only fruit, but also when it is ripe.
(Photo: HTV) The female student Karline Janmaat of the University of St-Andrews (UK) discovered this when observing a group of mangabey monkeys for 4 months in Uganda.
Janmaat saw these monkeys try the fruits by touching and smelling them. This behavior has been known in primates. But she also notes that when the weather gets warmer, these animals often return to where they found the fruit. They know that when the temperature rises, the fruit ripens.
' Humid forests are a competitive environment, so the ability to predict when ripe fruit is very beneficial, ' explains Janmaat.
