Mount Chile sprayed fire with bright light on the night
Villarrica volcano in southern Chile yesterday erupted into a fiery fountain that glowed in the night sky, leaving nearly 4,000 people living nearby.
According to The Guardian, the government evacuated about 4,000 people from the area around Villarrica, including the areas of the town of Pucón and Conaripe - the famous tourist area in Chile. The government also issued a red warning and blocked roads around the mountain.
Luis Lara, head of the volcanic surveillance network of the Chile Department of Geology and Mining, said similar large eruptions could occur over the next few hours or days. Today's eruption is low compared to the eruptions that happened.
Villarrica is over 2,800 meters high, one of the active volcanoes in Latin America. This volcano has an eruption cycle about every 10 years. In the eruption in 1971, Villarrica created poisonous clouds that killed about 10 people.
