MySpace touches 29,000 green beard lovers
More than 29,000 "goofy" names have set up profiles on MySpace and use the world's largest virtual social network to "release goats and feed".
The discovery was announced yesterday by MySpace.com, at a request from the US Department of Justice, which handles complaints from many parents accusing MySpace of helping green bearers.
At first, MySpace strongly refused, citing federal personal privacy laws. However, since May, the company had to compromise and began sharing information about the number of goats and their addresses with authorities.
At the time, MySpace announced it had used a special database, able to detect profiles of green beards. More than 7000 profiles (out of a total of 180 million member profiles of this site) have been permanently deleted from the virtual social network to ensure the safety of juvenile users.
However, despite MySpace's first hit, after two months, the number of green beards discovered was still increased, not reduced: 29,000 people, which is more than 4 times.
Potential pitfalls
" I was shocked and shocked when the number of sex criminals increased so dramatically in a short time, especially when there was no explanation ," Judge Richard Blumenthal commented.
The entire profile of 29,000 names was removed from MySpace by MySpace, although the company did not comment further on its actions.
Currently, the US Justice Department is fighting for Congress to pass a bill, requiring children to get permission from their parents before setting up a profile on a virtual social network.
The website's mission will be to verify the identity and age of the parent before accepting the user's membership application.
Authorities say that this requirement is necessary, because they have discovered more than 100 incidents over the years that the blue bearers used MySpace to reach their prey.
Most recently, a man in Virginia kidnapped and abused a 14-year-old girl he knew through MySpace.
