Mysterious object appears on Florida beach

Archaeologists discovered a wooden and metal object, about 25m long, appearing on the coast of Florida, USA when the tide receded .

Beachgoers said the object appeared after Hurricane Nicole and Hurricane Ian swept through Florida, eroding the shoreline , the New York Times reported on December 5.

Officials said the object appeared to be made of wood and metal and was about 25 meters long. It could not be pulled out of the sand because of high tides.

'The state's maritime archaeology team has been notified to investigate further ,' a Volusia County spokesperson said. Archaeologists will examine the object further when the tide goes out on December 5.

Florida's coastline has been plagued by strange objects in recent years, as erosion and tides expose them.

Many people on social media speculated that the object could be a barrier, a shipwreck, part of an old pier, or spectator seating from when NASCAR held races on the beach.

"It's a mystery. A lot of people think it's part of an old ship," Volusia Coast Guard spokeswoman Tamra Malphurs told Southern Living. "Hopefully we'll have some answers soon."

In 2020, a couple discovered several wooden beams and pegs protruding from the sand while walking along the Crescent Beach. Maritime archaeologists believe they are the remains of the 19th-century ship Caroline Eddy.

In 2021, a high school student picked up a gold coin from the 1715 Armada (a Spanish fleet that sank off the coast of Florida in 1715 due to a hurricane) in Turtle Trail.

In October, a man dug up a $40,000 diamond ring off the coast of St. Augustine.
