Thousands of pits in the rock that form a strip in Peru could be the product of an ancient civilization.

Scientists discovered about 6,900 pits carved into rocks, forming strips stretching more than 1.6 km on rugged mountain terrain. This finding was recorded in the Pisco Valley, Peru.

Epoch Times said the pits are approximately one meter wide, one to two meters deep. Most of them are lined up, while others are staggered. Some pits are quite shallow and seem to be incomplete.

According to scientists' estimates, long pits can be formed over decades. Local residents do not know who created them, how to proceed and the reason for this work.

Some believe that they are vertical graves to bury the dead, but there are no bones, artifacts, or corpses nearby. According to the assumptions of many archaeologists, pits are used to store grains and other essential items. However, in fact, people can build grain containers easier than carving into stone.

About a few kilometers east of the hole, researchers determined the ruins of an ancient civilization through satellite imagery. Although this area is not considered to be a specific civilization, it has the same remnants as Machu Picchu.
