Mysterious rose lake in Australia

Not the usual white or blue, the color of Lake Hillier attracts tourists by its rare pink color.

Lake Hillier is a pink lake on Middle Island , the largest of the islands on the Recherche Islands , Western Australia. Looking down from above, Hillier Lake looked like a bubble of inflated gum. That made Hillier Lake so special.

The lake is about 600m long, covered by a strip of sand and a dense forest of Paperbark and eucalyptus forest. A narrow strip of sand is covered by vegetation separating the lake from the southern sea.

Unlike the pink lakes in the world like lakes in Retba and the salt lake in San Francisco Bay, scientists still have not determined where Hillier's pink color is. However, many scientists speculate that the pink color of the lake was created by Dunaliella salina and Halobacteria . Another theory is that it is caused by a red bacterium in the salt shell. This color is not a work of sunlight either, because people have taken a bucket of water from the lake and the pink remains the same despite moving the barrel position.

According to the most recent survey, the researchers confirmed that this bacterium and many other extremophile bacteria are responsible for unusual colors in the lake.

Scientists describe extremophile as the most interesting and exotic component of the ecosystem on Earth because they can exist in places where few other species can live. These creatures can thrive in harsh environments, including lakes with high salinity levels like Lake Hillier.

Among the many bacteria collected in the Hillier Lake samples, the scientists also found other red bacteria including some ancient bacteria and a bacterium called Salinibacter ruber .

The team also unexpectedly found a bacterium called Dechloromonas aromatica . They are very good at breaking down compounds like benzene and toluene, which are often found in chemical solvents.

Except for a few years people conducted salt mining here, pink island and lake almost still intact. The lake provides visitors with the most amazing sights, which are the natural wonders of the world .

In addition to Hillier, there are some unique pink lakes in the world, such as Lake Retba (also known as Lac Rose) located north of the Cap Vert peninsula, northeast of the capital Dakar, Senegal. Lake Salina de Torrevieja and La Salina de La Mata are 2 salt lakes surrounding Torrevieja, a coastal city in Southeast Spain. Lake Dusty Rose is located in British Columbia, Canada and has exotic properties. Although the lake has no salt or algae, the water is still pink. Or Masazirgol (also known as Masazir Lake) is a salt lake in the Qaradag region, near Baku, Azerbaijan.
