NASA wants to bring 3D printers to ISS next year

The US Aerospace Agency (NASA) announced on September 30 a plan to bring a 3D printer (3D) into space next year to help astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS). ). This machine will be used to print the replacement parts and necessary tools in weightless conditions.

This will be the first time a 3D printer is used in space and will help reduce the cost of future space conquests. This device must be able to withstand large vibrations when missiles leave the pedestal and operate safely in the closed ISS environment.

NASA has chosen start-up technology company Made in Space to create a 3D printer the size of a microwave oven."Imagine an astronaut needing to perform a vital repair operation on ISS" - Aaron Kemmer, executive director of Made in Space said - "Instead of hoping that the components and tools needed set available on the space station, people can print them and use them when needed ".

In addition to 3D printers, NASA is experimenting with small satellites manufactured with 3D technology, which can be launched from ISS and transfer data to Earth. Last August, NASA also successfully tested a metal rocket component, printed from a 3D printer. These experimental activities are in an effort to reduce the cost of space research and conquest, while the US economy is still facing many difficulties.
