According to a report of the first environmental forum on the lake in Nanjing - the capital of Jiangsu Province in the east of China - the country had about 24,000 natural lakes by the end of last week with a total area of 83,000 km 2. . They help maintain ecosystems, control floods and reduce droughts. However, natural lakes are facing many challenges.
"Each year about 20 lakes naturally disappear. Human activity causes this effect. Water quality is declining, sediments are thickening, the wetlands shrink and aquatic organisms. Therefore, the ability to control floods and reduce drought of lakes is affected, " China Daily quoted in the report.
Speaking in the forum, Chen Lei, Minister of Water Resources, pledged to strengthen the state's management to protect the lakes.
