Discovered for the first time from the end of last year, this new type of attack aimed at shooting important servers in the " global Internet traffic " map. They rushed to bombard here with a huge amount of meaningless data that even the most powerful and leading computers do not support. In the most recent case, the attackers gained control of an Internet name server in South Africa and were free to erase all content.

Name servers are specialized specialized servers that are responsible for driving Internet information flows to the right path and to the right destination.

After that, the hacker will send fake requests to the "slave" computer directory. From here, a wave of meaningless data typhoon will be "unleashed" to straighten out any target the attacker wants.

Security experts have followed at least 1500 targeted attacks of this type, with the common denominator being commercial websites, large ISPs and leading Internet infrastructure firms that have all been defeated in the least. a week. The attacks are so accurate and targeted that most Internet users are unaware.

Ken Silva, VeriSign's security manager, compared the size of this attack with the damage and losses in the October 2002 strong attack. Meanwhile, 9 out of 13 "root" servers specializing in global Internet traffic management were knocked out. VeriSign operates two of these 13 root servers, but their computers are not affected.

However, according to Silva, this attack was significantly larger than in 2002, both in intensity and harm. He said the attacks earlier this year only need to mobilize 6% (out of a total of more than 1 million name servers across the Internet) has flooded the target network. Many cases have exceeded both 8GB / s, a number can be considered "Terrifying".

" It must be called the Katrina of the new Internet ," Silva said.

The US Emergency Computer Response team, which warned network engineers in December, to quickly reconfigure name servers, to prevent hackers from using them in an attack.
