New gecko species discovered in Vietnam

The name of this species is named after Professor Le Xuan Canh, Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, to acknowledge his support and contributions to biodiversity research in Vietnam.

A new species of gecko in our country has just been published by German and Vietnamese scientists in Zootaxa Magazine. Standard samples of this species are collected at Huu Lien (Lang Son) and Sa Pa (Lao Cai). Newly named species Gekko canhi Roesler, Nguyen, Doan, Ho, Nguyen & Ziegler, 2010.

The name of this species is named after Professor Le Xuan Canh, Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, to acknowledge his support and contributions to biodiversity research in Vietnam.

This is also the third new gecko species discovered in the last two years in the North of Vietnam, besides the Goniurosaurus catbaensis species discovered in Cat Ba island (Hai Phong) and Goniurosaurus huulienensis discovered in Huu Lien. (Lang Son) in 2008.

With an average size of 8.5-10 cm, there are scabs of upper lip and lower lip, back and upper legs with small rows of tumors, scales below the wide tail tail ., new gecko Gekko canhi has morphological characteristics quite similar to the Japanese Gecko Gekko japonicus , however it is different from the second species in that: the size is larger, there is more than the number of squid scales, the number of scales around the body, the number of scales .

This is also the 8th species of Gecko Gekko recorded in Vietnam.
