New York will build composting islands
Like many major cities in the world, New York produces a large amount of waste every year. The process of garbage disposal is carried out with many stages, including those affecting the environment, such as gathering and transporting garbage.
To mitigate the harmful effects, Present Architecture launched the initiative to build a series of composting islands along the city coast. The project is named Green Loop , consisting of a network of about 10 islands. Each island consists of an underground cellar that specializes in garbage disposal and a floating part is a green park.
The distance from the islands to the residential areas in the city is calculated to narrow the distance the garbage truck must move. The underground section will handle organic waste and the output is composted. Compost will then be transported by trains and barges. It should also be noted that compost (also called compost) is a mixture of rotting organic matter, such as leaf litter or animal manure, used as a fertilizer or soil improvement.
Besides waste disposal, these islands also contribute to creating a green space for New York City residents. Artificial islands provide an area of 50 hectares of green grassland, an ideal place for people to relax and relieve stress. Mr. Evan Erlebacher - Present Architecture Director said: "Green Loop is a similar island type as a jetty or floating restaurant. Like many other big cities, New York is currently lacking open space for everyone. The Green Loop island chain, which complements the residential areas with a public green space, will bring benefits to the people, besides meeting the demand for garbage collection and treatment.
Mr. Erlebacher also said that Green Loop is just a preliminary project. To realize it will face many difficulties, especially financial problems. But with the consent of residents and government agencies, this project is completely feasible.
