Norway euthanized the walrus Freya after it was too much of a nuisance.

Norwegian authorities euthanized the famous walrus known as Freya on August 14th after repeatedly warning crowds to stay away from the attention-grabbing animal.

Frank Bakke-Jensen, head of the Norwegian Fisheries Directorate, said in a statement: " The decision to euthanize was made on the basis of a global assessment of the long-term threat to human safety ," according to AFP.

"We carefully considered all possible solutions. We concluded that the animal's health could not be guaranteed by any of the currently available means ," Frank Bakke-Jensen stated.

Officials had previously stated that they were considering euthanasia for Freya because repeated appeals to the public to keep their distance from the 600kg object had been ineffective .

Freya, nicknamed after the Norse goddess of beauty and love, became a magnet for crowds on July 17th when she first appeared in the waters off the Norwegian capital.

Walruses typically live in the northern latitudes of the Arctic.

Between naps—a walrus can sleep up to 20 hours a day—Freya has been spotted chasing a duck, attacking a swan, and frequently sunbathing on boats. The animal's considerable size poses a significant risk to the boats.

Despite repeated appeals from authorities, curious onlookers continue to approach the walrus, sometimes bringing children along, to take pictures.

Freya has previously appeared in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden, and chose to spend part of the summer in Norway.

The walrus first attracted attention in Norway when it climbed onto boats in Kragero, a tranquil southern coastal village.

Walruses are a protected species, primarily feeding on invertebrates such as mollusks, shrimp, crabs, and small fish.
