"I have never seen such a big fish. The most recent paddle fish we have seen is only less than 1 meter in length," said Mark Waddington, the captain of CIMI's training ship Tole.

According to Jeff Chace from Catalina Island Aquarium, paddle fish often swim at a depth of nearly 1km above the sea level, rarely seen near the coast, they often appear when sick or dead.

This fish seems to die from natural causes. The tissue samples and video clips of this fish are sent to the University of California, Santa Barbara, to conduct research.

Paddle fish live in the deep ocean and can be up to 15m long, they are considered the longest bone fish in the world.
