Due to the changing living environment and indiscriminate exploitation, the source of catfish in the wild has been depleted.

Realizing the urgency of preserving and restoring a local precious fish variety, contributing to enriching natural aquatic resources, since 2011, Ha Nam Department of Science and Technology has implemented the project "Research on conservation, application and development of seabass in Ba Sao town, Kim Bang".

So far, the unit has basically completed the objectives and contents set out in the project such as investigating the current state of resources, areas distributed in Tam Chuc lagoon, Ba Sao town, Kim Bang district and determined. get the species name in the catfish classification system of Ha Nam.

Project implementers reported the highest ratio of catfish maturity in static water ponds in April-May and lowest in August-September; domestication of wild caught fish reaches 76.7% and cultivates mature and good sex.

In particular, the project implementers have successfully researched the method of artificial reproduction of catfish with the ratio of 67.5% (plus and minus 12.5%); the rate of fertilized eggs reached 61.7% (plus and minus 2.9%); hatching rate 48.17% (plus minus 11.83%).

The number of fry collected was 2,167; Feeding fry to fry and from fry to fingerlings reached an average rate of 66.25%.

Mr. Tran Thang Long, Head of Science Management Department, Ha Nam Department of Science and Technology, said that after more than three years of implementation, the biggest success of the project has been the implementation of artificial breeding method of catfish. - a decisive factor for conservation of seed sources; At the same time, it is possible to identify the distribution area of the fish that live mainly in rock, clear water.

Especially through tests, analysis, research, it is possible to announce the name of endemic fish in Kim Bang district - Ha Nam catfish (scientific name is Channa hanamensis ). Not only is it of scientific value, catfish is also a special species for high economic value. If properly invested, catfish will bring a great source of income for farmers.
