Rare picture of babies born in amniotic sac

A Greek obstetrician has just posted on Facebook a picture of an unusual, extremely rare phenomenon: a child born inside intact amniotic sac.

Usually, the amniotic sac will rupture to prepare the fetus to get out of the womb, the process called "rupture of membranes". However, during the caesarean section that took place on March 12 in Amarousion, north of the Greek capital Athens, Dr. Aris Tsigris helped a woman give birth in an intact amniotic sac.

Dr. Tsigris said, because the amniotic sac was not broken, the child did not even realize it was born and still acted as if it were still inside the womb. Although born in a rare situation, the child is not in danger, because it does not need to breathe until the amniotic sac breaks, the placenta is removed and the umbilical cord is cut.

According to experts, the amniotic sac is a sac containing the fluid inside the uterus of pregnant women, which acts as a shelter and nourishment for unborn babies. Amniotic sac is also called "membrane" because it is composed of 2 membranes: amniotic membrane and chorion.

Fluid inside the amniotic sac, also called amniotic fluid, is colored and clear, helping the fetus float and move easily in the amniotic sac. Amniotic fluid also helps maintain a constant temperature for the baby's nourishing environment, helping it to avoid impact and injury and can breathe and swallow.

Amniotic sac begins to form and fill the fluid within a few days after a woman conceives. Amniotic fluid is primarily water, but from about 10 weeks of pregnancy onwards, the child will discharge a small amount of urine into the amniotic fluid.

The amount of amniotic fluid in the amniotic sac will gradually increase throughout the pregnancy period. However, from the 38th week of pregnancy, amniotic fluid will decrease slightly until the baby is born.
