Revealing the cause of the Russian Moon lander crash

The Russian Space Agency Roscosmos has just revealed the reason why the Luna-25 lunar lander crashed while preparing to land on the Moon.

On August 21, according to RT news agency, the head of Russia's Roscosmos space agency, Yury Borisov, revealed the main reason behind the failure of the Luna-25 Moon mission .

According to Mr. Borisov, the probe did not turn off its engine in time and deviated from its planned orbit.

'Unfortunately, the engine shutdown did not take place normally, according to the sequence diagram, but based on the time stamp . Therefore, instead of being carried out in 84 seconds as planned, the engine shutdown took place in 127 seconds ,' Borisov told Rossiya 24 television.

This factor was the key reason behind the failure of the mission, Borisov said, adding that a special commission has been set up to investigate the incident.

'Preliminary calculations show that due to abnormal operation of the propulsion system , the device moved into open lunar orbit and, essentially, crashed into the lunar surface ,' the Russian space agency's top official said.

The head of Roscosmos noted that although this mission failed, Russian space engineers gained valuable experience while building Luna-25.

'Of course, the team will take into account all the mistakes made during this mission, and I hope that the future missions of Luna-26, 27 and 28 will be successful ,' Borisov believes.

Luna-25 is intended to land near the Moon's south pole, which is known for its rugged terrain.

All previous lunar landing missions by various countries landed in the equatorial region of the celestial body.

Before the accident, the Russian spacecraft also successfully reached the lunar orbit, sending back high-resolution images of the Moon. The spacecraft was expected to land on the Moon as early as August 21, but the accident occurred.

Luna-25 is the first probe Russia has sent to the Moon in 47 years, since the Luna-24 mission in 1976.
