The medieval urban area is an old town on Rhodes Island which is recognized by Unesco as a World Cultural Heritage and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece and Europe. This is an architectural complex that is surrounded by walls. Life in this city wall was once very bustling, bustling as a busy city in its heyday.
The island soon had human habitation, according to historians, there are settlers from the Neolithic period. Although traces and evidence of this are no longer preserved. In the 16th century BC, Minoan people came to Rhodes and settled here for a very long time. According to Greek mythology, people of this period were called Telchines . In the 15th century BC, the Mycenaean tribes invaded the island. After the collapse of the Mycenaea empire in the Bronze Age, the former residents of the island recovered their lives and have since expanded their trading with the people of Cyprus.
In the 8th century BC, the settlements on the island began to form. By this time the Dorians were the people who had the merit of building and forming settlements. They built three important cities: Lindos, Laylyssos and Kameiros . Along with the next 3 cities Kos, Cnidus and Halicarnassus have formed the so-called Hexapolis Dorian (Greek means Six cities). Greek mythology has been recorded: the island was born through a combination of the sun god Helios and the goddess Rhode, so the cities on the island are named after their sons.
Persians invaded and occupied the island for centuries until the Athens army defeated it. After Alexander 's death, his generals gained control of the empire. Three generals Ptolemaios, Seleucus and Antiqonos succeeded in dividing the island. From here Rhodes formed strong commercial and cultural relations and allied with Egypt. The commercial activity of the whole region took place very strongly and vibrantly until the 3rd century BC.
At that time, the city was strongly developed into a major maritime, commercial and cultural center of the whole region. The island's own currency is even circulated everywhere in the Mediterranean region.
In 305, Antigonus directed his son Demetrios to encircle and raid Rhodes to break the alliance between the island and Egypt. Although before that, in 304, Antigonos gave in and signed a peace deal to leave a large amount of military equipment. The Rhodes people sold the equipment and used that money to build the famous statue of the sun god Helios - the Statue of the Sun in Rhodes .
In 672 AD, Rhodes was captured by the Muslim army of Muwiyah I. In 1090, it was continued to be occupied by another Muslim army, but only a short time later Emperor Alexius I Cornnenus of Rome (Eastern Rome) recaptured the island in the first crusade. .
In 1309 the Eastern Roman period ended when the island was occupied by the forces of the Relief Knights. Under the rule of the new world, it was called "Rhodes Knight" . At this stage Rhodes Knights rebuilt the city and it became an ideal city in Europe.
After that, the island was occupied, competing among the forces several times. For that reason, there are many different origins on the island, including Jews. In 1919, the Italians occupied Rhode from the Turks. Until 1947, along with other islands, Rhodes unified into Greece.
The statue of the sun god on Rhodes Island, once a symbol of Greece, is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. According to recorded documents, this huge bronze statue was built at the scene of the scene, completed in 280 BC. During the massive earthquake in 224 BC, the statue was completely destroyed, so far there is no trace of the statue still preserved.
