Search Wikia launches the online community

The highly anticipated open source search engine Search Wikia yesterday (January 7) has officially launched the global online community. Jimmy Wales expects the open-source nature of the community-wide effort to help Search Wikia stir and reshape a market dominated by the Google giant.

The 'father' Wikipedia said Search Wikia launched yesterday could not be considered a 'Google killer' because this is just the first phase of this search engine building project. It takes time and effort for volunteers to contribute, so Search Wikia is really complete.

Search Wikia uses a similar image to Wikipedia's famous online encyclopedia. Network community together contribute to building the content of the dictionary. With Search Wikia, Internet users will contribute to rating and adding more information to search results.

' Search Wikia is currently just a pilot project. The ultimate goal of this project is to build a search engine that can compete with Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL or Ask.com , 'says Wales. ' I'm not sure how long it will take Search Wikia to achieve standard search quality. Perhaps it will take at least 2 years '.

At the beginning of each Search Wikia search results page, an article called 'mini article' displays some information about the keywords that users search for. For example, searching for information about Google, the 'mini article' will display its referral information. Below is a list of search results.

Mr. Wales said that the new users can only search for regular web in English language but in the future the company will add the ability to search for news and images in many different languages.
