Ultraviolet (UV) light has now been used as an antiseptic in hospitals, dental surgeries, swimming pools and other water treatment systems, but has not previously been used to combat odor from shoes This kind of invisible naked light works at wavelengths that cause chemical reactions in bacteria, neutralizing them and making them no longer dangerous.

According to the inventors, the device called SteriShoe is the first of its kind to use UV rays to kill bacteria that cause unpleasant odors in shoes. The Daily Mail reported that the SteriShoe device was placed inside the shoe and turned on the power before eliminating unpleasant odors.

To prevent users from direct exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the device, SteriShoe is equipped with many safety features. Specifically, SteriShoe has a compression sensor, which means it will only start when placed inside a lightweight shoe and squash. Because it must operate in a dark and closed environment, the device also has a second sensor, which can scan the surroundings to ensure it is dark enough to activate UV light.

Manufacturers claim, an average person releases nearly a quarter of a foot of sweat every day, but SteriShoe is capable of killing 99.9% of bacteria in just 45 minutes. The manufacturer added that the SteriShoe device is especially useful for people with fungal itchy feet, toenails or "stinking" feet.

The SteriShoe device is currently produced in the US and is available for sale online for £ 80 ($ 128.8). Each device is provided with 2 shoe bags, so users can use SteriShoe to disinfect their muzzle shoes or sandals.
