The study was published in SLEEP magazine on August 1. Researchers from West Virginia University School of Medicine have relied on data from 30,379 adults who participated in the 2005 national health survey, in which one of the questions raised by this survey was : 'How many hours a day do you normally sleep? '

As a result, 8% of respondents said they slept 5 hours a day or less.

Through analysis, the scientists identified this group of people at risk of cardiovascular disease twice as much as those who slept 7 hours a day. In contrast, 9% of respondents said they slept 9 hours or more each day and also had a cardiovascular risk.

Among the participants, there were 2,146 cases of cardiovascular disease reported as angina, coronary artery disease, heart attack and stroke.

Associate Professor, Dr. Anoop Shankar of West Virginia University School of Public Health said: ' Our research shows that abnormal sleep times have an impact on cardiovascular health. Sleep disorders can be a risk for cardiovascular disease even in healthy subjects. '

Although each person has a different sleep time, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that most adults need 7-8 hours of sleep each night to feel comfortable the next day.
