Over the past few days, thousands of people in the downstream area of Song Tranh 2 hydropower project in Bac Tra My district (Quang Nam) are worried because they discovered many cracks and water leaks in the main dam body of this project.

In addition to the deep fissure in the left near the main dam, local authorities and people in Bac Tra My district discovered many cracks and leaks of water from the lake bed through the main dam body of Song Tranh 2 hydropower project.

Currently, the body of the dam on the left has 4 cracks and a strong water leak from the area of the lake seeping through the dam body, flowing down like a stream. According to Mr. Tran Van Hai, Head of the Song Tranh 2 Project Management Board, the above cracks are located at the thermal slots of the concrete block of the dam bank. Mr. Hai said that the phenomenon of absorbing water through cracked heat slots is under control.

"Leakage leak seeping water from the lake bed through the main dam with a intensity of 30 liters per second appeared from November 2011 within the scope of design requirements, can not be dangerous" , Head of the Project Management Board Song Tranh 2 electricity said.

Mr. Hai affirmed that these leaks are not related to earthquakes, currently the Management Board is directing and mobilizing human resources to focus on overcoming."We have signed a contract package worth more than USD 100,000 to bring equipment for earthquake monitoring, temperature measurement, permeability . from the US and Canada for installation completed before Tet in the construction area. " Mr. Hai said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Kim Son, Deputy Secretary of Bac Tra My District Party Committee affirmed that the phenomenon of cracking, water leakage at the river bank of Song Tranh 2 caused much concern for local authorities as well as people in the lower area. save the project. According to him, the crack, the vein flowing massively from the lake bed through the main dam of the hydropower plant is unusual, especially after the continuous earthquakes from before Tet.

This morning, Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, Vice Chairman of Bac Tra My District People's Committee, said that since the Lunar New Year until now, the Song Tranh 2 hydropower downstream area continues to have many aftershocks and explosions like mines. breaking rock but small intensity and ground shakes shorter time than earthquakes before Tet.

Last year, Song Tranh 2 hydropower continuously emitted many loud bangs that shook houses and furniture. Local people and authorities are very worried. The Vietnam Institute of Geological Science and Technology has sent missions to this area to survey. Scientists' conclusions about the cause of underground explosions are triggered by earthquakes.

According to Mr. Tuan, since the conclusion of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the cause of explosion in the Song Tranh underground is an earthquake that triggered in December 2011, until now, at the end of March, no professional agency has been seen. Which supports the installation of monitoring stations, dangerous earthquake warning alerts for people.

Song Tranh 2 Hydropower has a total investment of VND 5,194 billion, built in March 2006 with two units (total of 190MW). At the end of 2010 both units are officially generating electricity. The main dam of the reservoir is located close to the provincial road 616. Currently the reservoir capacity of Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant is the largest in the Central region, with about 730 million m3 of water, designed higher than the downstream area. about 100m.
