Spain: Continuous earthquake, at least 10 people died

Thousands of people in the city of Lorca in southeastern Spain had to sleep outside yesterday, hours after the town was shaken by two consecutive earthquakes, killing at least 10 people and dozens injured person.

The earthquake caused many houses to collapse. Television shows broken windows and houses are now just ruins on Lorca street. Rescuers believe the number of people killed and injured has increased.

The powerful 5.3-magnitude earthquake occurs at 4:47 pm (local time) with the epicenter located 50 km from Murcia on the Mediterranean coast - the US Geological Survey confirmed. This area is located about 350km from Madrid. The earthquake followed a 4.5-magnitude earthquake at 3:05 pm with the earthquake center in the area - the US agency said.

People in the area ran out of the house, concentrating on squares, parks and empty areas. According to local television, the infrastructure was badly damaged by the earthquake.

' The entire city center of Lorca has been devastated , ' said an official from the Murcia region on national radio. 'Thousands of people were very scared .'

A doctor for the news network El Pais said his colleagues went to the scene, where many people were seriously injured.

The army has been deployed to search for people trapped in the collapsed buildings and to aid the injured.
