Spinach leaves are 'turning' into human heart tissue

American biomedical researchers have made a big breakthrough, opening new doors for organ transplantation when using spinach leaves to create heart tissue. A group of scientists at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts (USA) were able to "transform" spinach leaves into heart tissue when utilizing the veins system for blood transfusion.

The study will be published in detail in the Biomaterials magazine in May, opening the door to the potential of using spinach leaves to develop healthy heart muscle layers that treat patients with heart attacks.

In the future, scientists plan to make use of cauliflower vegetables to form human lung cells.Meanwhile, researchers in Wisconsin who are collaborating with WPI continue to look for different types of leaves to develop into human body tissue.

Demand for organs and tissues for transplants is increasing. In the United States alone, 22 people die each day while waiting for an organ transplant. To compensate for this shortage, scientists have focused on developing tissue or even a part of the body in the laboratory environment.
