Strong earthquake, Indonesia warned the tsunami

Yesterday morning (October 25), a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, causing panic among locals and the Indonesian Geophysical and Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami warning. The warning was lifted 1 hour later.

The earthquake occurred at 4:00 am this morning local time in the Indian Ocean, at a depth of 10km, off the town of Bengkulu about 135km. The US Geological Surveillance Agency said the earthquake has a magnitude of 7.1 on the richter scale.

According to the Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysical Agency, the earthquake rocked the area once hit by a magnitude 8.4 earthquake last month that killed 23 people. The agency issued a tsunami warning and lifted it about an hour later.

'I was awakened by waves and rushed to take my child out,' said Titi Radiah, a resident of Bengkulu. She also said that 'everyone ran away from home' and her neighbors had been out on the street for about an hour before going home.

Meteorological officials Bengkulu said there was no information about the damage yet.
