Strong earthquake near Samoa

Early on October 15, a 6-magnitude earthquake rocked the Pacific region near Samoa, which has suffered a strong earthquake that caused devastating tsunamis two weeks ago.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 1am on October 15 (Vietnam time), about 265km northwest of Hihifo and Tonga and 2,620km north of Auckland, New Zealand - northeast, at a depth of 10km.

Gerard Fryer, a geophysicist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (based in Hawaii), says there is no risk of tsunamis. The USGS did not mention whether a tsunami warning was issued.

On September 30, a 8.3-magnitude strong earthquake caused tsunamis that killed more than 180 people in the island nation of American Samoa and nearby islands.

* In Indonesia, authorities said that by October 14, the total number of deaths caused by the earthquake on September 30 in this country was 1,117, 2 were missing. In addition, 1,214 were seriously injured and 1,688 were slightly injured.

In material terms, 135,448 houses were badly damaged and 78,604 houses were slightly damaged. Earthquakes also damaged 2,163 classrooms, 51 medical facilities, 1,001 religious facilities, 21 bridges, 178 roads and 130 irrigation works.
