Strong earthquakes in Yunnan, hundreds of people were injured

Authorities in Yunnan, China, said that a magnitude 6 earthquake struck the province last night (July 9), leaving more than 300 people injured and more than 10,000 houses collapsed.

The earthquake occurred at 19h19 (local time) at a depth of about 10km with the epicenter in Guantun, 200km from Kunming, according to the China Earthquake Network Center. Subsequently, this area was subjected to 8 strong aftershocks of 3 to 4.1 on the Richter scale.

The injured were taken to hospital for treatment, 30 of them are in critical condition.

According to the latest statistics, more than 10,000 houses collapsed and about 30,000 other houses were damaged in 6 areas of Chuxiong.

Authorities have been distributing tents, medicine and food to the people in Guantun right at night. More than 600 police officers were transferred to the earthquake area.
