Hundreds of houses collapsed due to earthquakes in China

A strong earthquake on December 1 shook the northwest of China, causing hundreds of houses to collapse.

The magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurred in the area of ​​Khach Thap, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous National Autonomous Region, at 10:48 am Beijing and Xinhua reported. The epicenter of the earthquake is 10 km deep from the ground.

Nearly 300 houses collapsed after the earthquake. About 2,000 other houses were damaged to varying degrees, AFP said. Nearly 1,500 people were evacuated from their homes. Tents and other relief equipment are being transported to the earthquake zone.

Xinjiang is the largest administrative unit in China, but only about 20 million people. Of these, Uighurs accounted for the largest share with 9 million people.

Earthquakes are very common in Xinjiang. A seizure of 5.4 magnitude last month occurred in the autonomous region, causing hundreds of houses to be damaged. In August, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake also occurred in this locality.
