The success of the trial promises to reduce the risk of malaria in children

The results of the Phase III trial of RTS, S , which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine , suggest that it can provide significant protection for African children with a safe level. Full and highly tolerated.

The trial was conducted at 11 locations in 7 countries across the Sahara region.

In the trial, 3 doses of RTS, S reduced risk of clinical malaria and acute malaria in children were 56% and 47% respectively.

Clinical malaria with symptoms of high fever and chills, can quickly develop into acute malaria with severe effects on blood, brain and kidney which can be fatal.

'The publication of the first experimental results in children 5-17 months of age marks an important milestone in the development of RTS and S vaccines,' said Tsiri Agbenyega, the principal investigator in the trial and Clinical Trial Committee Chairman, said.

'Sadly, many people have accepted malaria as a real part of life in Africa , ' he said.

'The problem is not so. The international community's continuing interest and the evidence we report today, will bring new hope to the ability to control malaria , 'the expert stressed.
