Unesco's Scientific, Educational and Cultural Organization has recognized the Egyptian Whale Valley as a World Natural Heritage in 2005.

The Egyptian desert is home to some of the best preserved wildlife sites in the world, in which Al-Hitan Wadi Valley has a large collection of fossil whale bones.
