Water guinea pig (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is the world's largest rodent. Also called capybara and chigüire, this is a member of the Hydrochoerus genus, in which it is one of the two remaining species, the other is the small hamster (Hydrochoerus isthmius).
Water guinea-pigs are native to South America, inhabiting grass and dense forest, near water sources. They are highly social species and can be grouped into groups of up to 100 individuals, although they often live in groups of 10-20.
