Thailand exercises against tsunami
This morning (July 25), Thailand held the largest tsunami evacuation rehearsal in Southeast Asia in the coastal provinces of Pang-nga, Ranong, Krabi, Trang, Phuket and Satul.
On Patong beach in Phuket province, about 5,000 people participated. The rehearsal begins with a tsunami warning, followed by announcements in English and many other languages. Experts from over 40 countries participated in the monitoring.
"This evacuation drill is a very important measure to pull back tourists," said provincial governor of Phuket Niran Kanlayanamitr. 'When tsunamis hit the coast, a lot of lives were lost, and then only 5% of visitors returned. I believe when there is an early warning system, visitors will have faith again. '
On December 26, 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami killed 8,212 people in Thailand, including many foreign tourists.
