The Lao rock mouse was first discovered in 1996 when its meat was sold at a market in Thakhek (Khammouan, Laos). This rat species is thought to be extinct 11 million years ago.

Big beaks were the least known bird in the world. For centuries, it was known only through a fossil record obtained in 1867. In 2006 in Thailand, a large population of reeded warbler populations was discovered. Even so, this bird is still a mystery.

Descriptions of the 1930's Chaco grass are purely based on fossils, because scientists think it is extinct. In 1975, an individual of this species was discovered in the Chaco region (Paraguay). Up to now, according to statistics, this species has about 3,000 animals and is the largest grass species.

Monito del Monte has been thought to have disappeared from 11 million years ago until a single animal was found in a bamboo bush in the southern Andes (Chile).

A 4-year-old giant La Palma lizard was found in 2007 in the Canary Islands (Spain). Previously, this species was thought to be extinct about 500 years ago.

Handfin is thought to be extinct from the end of the Cretaceous period (about 65 million years ago). By 1938, it appeared again on the west coast of South America, near the mouth of the Chalumna River. This is one of the oldest jaw fish alive today.

After disappearing more than a century ago, New Holland mice were found in 1967 Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park (Australia).
