The beach turns red because of shrimp body

Millions of shrimp carcasses washed up on a coast in Chile that made local fishermen feel shocked and worried.

The incident happened in the city of Coronel, about 530 km from Chile's capital, Santiago. In addition to shrimp body, people still see hundreds of crabs on the beach, the BBC reported.

Local fishermen believe that the three nearby power plants are the culprits that cause shrimp and crab deaths. They explained that all three plants use seawater to cool power generators. The leadership of all three factories have not commented on the case.

"I am a 69-year-old fisherman and started fishing since I was only a 9-year-old. But throughout my life, I have never seen such a large scale disaster , " said Gregorio Ortega, a fisherman. local, told radio Bio Bio.

Experts say shrimp die massively due to lack of oxygen and rising sea temperature. Oxygen concentration may be reduced due to water pollution, and sea temperature may increase due to El Nino weather phenomenon.

Marisol Ortega, spokesman for the Coronel city fisherman community, is concerned that the disaster will negatively impact fishermen's livelihood.

"We are thinking that we cannot catch anything from the sea in the future , " she said.
