In the United States, experts have had countless times to check the status of the two brothers. The doctor examined the sticky flesh between the brothers with a needle to determine sensitivity. When a doctor pokes a needle near someone's side, the person feels more painful. The expert also found that when a person feels the sour taste, the other person feels the same way, or tickles a person, the other person feels the same as his brother.

After concluding the contract with Robert Hunter, the twins bought land in North Carolina and started their own business. They are officially US citizens. In 1831, when it was announced that conjoined twins Chang and Eng Bunker came to France, the government was so apprehensive that it prohibited them from entering.

In 1843, Chang and Eng married their sisters Adelaide and Sarah Yates, two daughters of a local landlord. Their marriage had a violent reaction from the community, even being accused of "animalistic marriage" . Many articles were written about this scandal, even asking whether women should be sentenced for "marrying a four-legged person".

In 1870, Chang suffered a stroke that paralyzed the right side of his body. Eng took good care of his brother. However, Chang still had to use crutches and his brother's help in his daily activities. Later, Chang's health weakened and he died in early 1874. Two and a half hours after his brother's death, Eng left.

The doctors initially assumed that Eng died because of the fear of the death of his twin brother. The autopsy then showed that both of their bodies share blood vessels and arteries. The twins share the lungs, so Eng died of blood loss.
